Win as party candidates: Gelu

REGISTRAR of Political Parties and Candidates Dr Alphonse Gelu says candidates must win elections as party candidates and not independently.
Dr Gelu, while commending newly-elected MP Menyamya Benjamin Philip, said the Registry of Political Parties and Candidates wanted to see more MPs elected as endorsed party members during national elections.
He told The National that it was good to see Philip being elected as the People’s National Congress (PNC) Party-endorsed candidate.
“We congratulate Philip for winning the by-election as a PNC candidate because that’s what we are working towards – having party-endorsed candidates win the election,” he said.
“We are pleased that he was among the top three candidates who were party-endorsed in the by-elections and we are encouraging more of this,” he said.
“The registry of political parties has carried out awareness to have more candidates endorsed by political parties during national elections.”
Dr Gelu urged people to vote candidates who are endorsed by political parties in the next national election in 2022.
He said in any democratic country around the world, political parties were a very important institution because they (political parties) were the ones that formed the government after the national elections and, subsequently, implement their party policies to govern the nation.

  • What about independent candidates? Don’t force candidates to endorse by parties. Some of the candidates have their onw rights to contest independently. Don’t force to lift the party names for the greedy party leaders. Choice is theirs.

  • This is a democratic country and everyone has their rights to stand as a independent mp or either join any political party of their choice, how can Dr,Gelu force any wining mp to join any party??
