NEWLY-elected Menyamya MP Benjamin Philip says his party’s policy on education was what helped him win the by-election.
Arriving in Port Moresby from Lae yesterday, the People’s National Congress candidate said in the remaining period (one and half years) of the term he would work to bring as much services and development to the electorate and thanked the voters for entrusting him the responsibility of representing them in Parliament.
“Menyamya is a rural district and is a real challenge in bringing service to the people but I thank my people and my party (PNC) for the support,” Philip said.
“This is the beginning and resurrection of the party.
“People gave me their votes because of the party’s policies, especially on free education.
“Many students from Menyamya were affected when the free education policy was stopped by the Government.
“I promised the people I would pay school fees of those who could not afford to do so at all institutions starting in June this year and next year.
“I am loyal to my party and I am ready to work.”
Deputy PNC leader and Yangoru-Saussia MP Richard Maru welcomed Philip to the party and said the win showed the trust they had with the Menyamya people.
“PNC party is coming back and this is the start of our return,” Maru said.
“PNC has some of the best policies.”
The writ for the Menyamya by-election is expected to be returned to Government House tomorrow (Friday) and Philip will be officially declared as MP

  • Menyamya one of the districts like Lufa district in EHP are districts in PNG where voters are blind indeed. They hardly feel the pinch of kisim taim in 5 years na salim yet ol man blo katim pig na baim coffee go in lo parliament.

  • And I heard deputy PNG leader Richard Maru travelled to menyamya on road PNC built. Well done Menyamya people for choosing your leader!

  • This will be the case in 2022 General Election because 80-90% of the population are rural based and low income earners. Free Education should have been let continued as it was but rather this government see fit to change it. PNC candiadte won not because of they like the party but like the policy..which is FREE EDUCATION! If current government let free education to continue, 2022 election would not be a problem for PANGU Party to be elcted in landslide victories. I believe PANGU Party would never make it because of half fee paying policy imposed by this government.

  • Some people need to be reminded of facts – PNC was well and truely kicked out of Morobe in the 2017 National Elections by Pangu – failed PNC policies including free education didnt stand in the way of PNC getting kicked out in that province. Small minded people shouldn’t be commenting about winning elections because of free education because they have little brains just like those folks back in the rural areas.

  • There are many needed areas to look at when one become the peoples’ representative.
