TOEA Wisil narrowly missed out on a spot in the 100-metre final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Wisil registered a season’s best time of 11.44 seconds in the semi-final of the women’s 100m, shaving two tenths of a second off her effort in the heats in Hampden Park Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, yesterday.

The 26-year-old finished fourth in her group, one of three groups, but missed out on securing a final berth with her time outside the top eight.

Wisil finished behind Jamaica’s Schillonie Calvert, who came first in a time of 11.08 seconds, followed by England’s Asha Philip (11.210 and Crystal Emmanuel of Canada (11.43).

Wisil did manage to beat Australian Melissa Breen who came in fifth in a time of 11.45.

Earlier in the day, Nelson Stone ran the 400m in 47.60s in his heat and Theo Piniau 48.50s.

Both did not qualify to go into the second round.

Parasport athlete, Joyleen Jeffrey, ran the 100m T12 in a time of 15.16s, coming off the starting blocks a bit late.

The time did not qualify her for the finals.

Another parasport athlete, Elias Larry, did well in his heat of the men’s 100m T37 and advanced to the final later in the day.

Larry finished eighth out of eight athletes with a time of 13.42s.

The medal winners stopped the clock at 11.65s, 11.89s and 12.04s.

Another parasport athlete, Martin Gereo, impressed on the track, setting a new personal best of 24.11m in the men’s para-discus final.

PNG chef de mission Emma Waiwai, said the team is still very proud of her achievement.

“You know making it to the semi-finals in an event in a tournament like this is something really big for us and for her to get to that stage was really good.

“It was unfortunate that she did not make the final.

“Otherwise we were very happy she actually got to the semi-finals: that’s an achievement,” Waiwai said.
