Sir Donald Cleland Park, located in the centre of Madang town, is being used as a rubbish dump. It is a park which children frequent for its playground facilities, while others go there to sit, relax, have lunch or chat. However, that has stopped because of the rubbish piling up. The overpowering stench from the piles, which include used diapers, tins, leftover food and other stinky items, attract flies and other vermin and is a health hazard.
This is the centre of a tourist town and the practice is just not right. This has to be corrected and the park restored to its original glory. The park used to be a lovely place in the 1980s and was cherished by town residents. It has lost its beauty due to development taking place but using it as a public dump is unacceptable.
