A WOMAN accused of stealing more than K70,000 from a man after spending two nights with him in a Port Moresby lodge appeared in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
Malisa Kaisa, 19, from Tauruba village in Rigo, Central, was charged with stealing K500 from Walo Karona’s wallet and his Westpac Handy Card which she used to buy goods for K70,957.85.
Kaisa appeared before magistrate Cosmas Bidar accused of committing the offence between April 6 and April 12 last year. On April 6, Karona, from Keapara village in Rigo, Central as well, was drinking with his nephew at Red Rock Bar and Grill along the Magi Highway in Central.
Kaisa was working as a waitress at the bar and asked to follow Karona. Karona agreed and at about 2pm he took her and booked a room at Boroko Lodge and spent the night there.
The next day, Karona gave her K500 as she left to go and see her relatives. Karona then got another woman to the room. At about 6pm, Kaisa returned to collect her belongings. Karona insisted for her to leave but she refused so he took her to Sky 9 Club at Boroko and had some beer until midnight. Then they returned to the room. Karona and the other woman slept on the floor and Kaisa slept on the bed. At about 8am, Karona woke up and noticed that Kaisa was gone. He checked his wallet and found out that K500 plus his bank card were missing. He tried to open the door but it was locked from outside. He and the woman yelled for help until some security guards opened the door.
It was alleged that Kaisa must have carefully watched Karona entering his pin number when they were drinking at the club. She went on a shopping spree purchasing items at different shops totalling K70,957.85.
On April 9 she used K31,608.65, on April 10 she used K19,567.90 and on April 11 she used K19,781.30.
On July 19 this year at about 9pm Karona sighted her at Cherry Tree Club at Gordon and with the assistance of police she was arrested and charged.
Bidar asked her if she wished to apply for bail and how much she was able to pay. She told court that she was able to pay K300. Bidar further asked where she was living and what she did for a living. She said she lived at Gordon 5 and worked at Lamana Hotel.
Police prosecutor Chief Sgt Polon Koniu objected to her bail.
“The defendant has told the investigating officer that she resides at Talai Settlement at Badili and now she’s telling the court that she stays at Gordon 5. The information does not corroborate and is contradictory, thereby she should not be granted bail. She should see a lawyer and do a proper bail application,” Koniu said.
Bidar said: “There’s an allegation of substantial amount of money being stolen. The information on your place of residence is also contradictory.
“The court will not consider bail until a proper bail application is made with supporting documents and guarantors.”
