A WOMAN who stabbed her husband to death four years ago in the National Capital District has been jailed for 13 years.
National Court Judge Justice Nicolas Miviri in sentencing Vero Lucas, 35, of Kundiawa Gembogl’s Yokama village in Chimbu, said no amount of compensation would bring back a life and the 13-year jail term must be fully served.
“I do not make any further deductions from that head sentence in view of the fact that an offender must bear personal responsibility for the crime,” he said.
Judge Miviri deducted three years and four months for the time already spent in custody at Bomana Prison. Judge Miviri said he took into account that Lucas had regretted what she did, and that she had paid compensation of K35,000 and 23 pigs.
“The family will not pay the prisoner’s way out of jail,” he said.
Judge Miviri added that family members had also suffered because of the husband’s death.
The court was told that on Oct 7, 2020, Lucas and her husband had an argument.
He hit her with a fan and broke their utensils.
Lucas used a kitchen knife to stab him twice on the chest.
She admitted the offence, saying she was remorseful for her actions, and that she did not want to kill her husband.
