A WOMAN between 30 and 40 years old was found dead beside the road at Tanam village outside Lae, police say.
Morobe police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal said the naked body of the woman was found early on Monday covered with leaves on Okuk Highway.
“Police were sent in there early on Monday morning and they got information from eyewitnesses and arrested a suspect from Okapa in Eastern Highlands,” he said.
Police believe the women was a local from Tanam village and worked as a shop assistant at Nadzab.
“Police are now working around the clock to establish the cause of the death, but we think that the woman must have been raped and later murdered,” Supt N’Drasal said.
He said there maybe be more than one person involved in the death and police are optimistic that more arrests will be made.
“As soon as we receive the full police report, we will then establish who is responsible for the rape and murder of this young woman.”
Supt N’Drasal said according to the woman’s manager, she had a drinking habit.
Supt N’Drasal called on women and girls to take extra care when moving around.
“Do not go out socialising at night and getting drunk with people you think you are stranger to them or those friends that could lead you to problem.”
