Women set for qualifiers

WITH just a week away before the OFC Women’s Nations Cup kicks off, PNG women’s coach Peter Gunemba is putting up his plan to prepare a better team for the challenge.
Among the best of PNG’s players is Marie Kaipu from NCDPSSA who finally called into the team to bolster the team’s speed up front.
Gunemba said players selected are from Lae, Madang, Kimbe, Simbu, Goroka and Port Moresby.
“The players selected were actually the best, most are current PNG representative,” Gunemba said.
With the days counting down Gunemba has formulated a plan to ensure PNG can maintain their top ranking in women’s soccer.
Twenty-three players have been called in for a week-long training camp in Lae which began on Friday and ended yesterday.
Gunemba said it was a challenge to prepare a side to be able to meet expectations in a short timeframe.
“We’ve got a lot to cover in a short time and this camp is to monitor the players understanding of the game and establish combinations between players.
“We’ll be working on our game plans, and studying our opponents. We have a short time to prepare but I’m confident we’ll do well,” Gunemba said.
The tournament in New Caledonia is from Nov 18 to Dec 1.
The winner of the tournament will be the Oceania qualifier for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup in France.
Fixtures: Pool A – PNG v Samoa (Nov 18), PNG v New Caledonia (Nov 21) and PNG v Tahiti (Nov 24).
The final squad will be announced on Wednesday.
