THE Gulf government has given K2 million to the Women’s Micro Bank for local women entrepreneurs to access for business start-up loans.
This funds will be accessible through the new Women’s Micro Bank Kerema branch set to be opened in Kerema town, next month.
The facility is currently being built within the provincial government building and Kerema Urban Local Level Government Office.
The project was initially proposed by local MP and Vice Minister for Petroleum Thomas Opa in 2022.
Over the last year, progressive development has seen extension and maintenance work done, awaiting opening in May.
Opa said the bank’s establishment will be followed by the launching of the District SME Policy and Scheme for Kerema.
He said there would be no free handouts as they would partner with financial institutions to empower their people.
“Our job is to facilitate and create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive in,” he said.
WMB’s branch in Kerema would be the second banking establishment apart from Bank South Pacific, and other finance firms such as United Finance and National Finance.
“The opening of the Micro Bank will see dignitaries such as Gulf Governor Sir Chris Haiveta, Central Bank governor Elizabeth Genia and representatives of other stakeholders for the official opening of the Micro Bank in Kerema,” Opa said.
The MP said some officers from the board or office of Trade and industry, Commerce and others involved in the SME phase were invited to attend the opening.
