EAST New Britain is asking for relief supplies after more than 70 houses was destroyed and infrastructures worth millions of kina washed away in a flood.
Gazelle MP and Police Minister Jelta Wong told The National that the province was badly devastated by the flood and the situation may worsen if the rain does not stop.
“So far we have been lucky that there has been no loss of life, but there has been extensive damage throughout, with most bridges flooded and breaking away and road links all flooded over,” he said.
“We have confirmed reports of 70 houses destroyed, however, the number could be bigger, only 70 were confirmed.
“Gardens, homes and vehicles have all been flooded over.”
Wong said if the rain continues to fall the situation may worsen as they were also concerned chemical wastes at Sinivit gold mine may overflow into the main river systems.
He also called on the National Disaster Centre to look into the situation and provide an emergency response aid to his people who were badly affected.
“I also appeal to the East New Britain Communities throughout the country and abroad and to the general public as well to donate relief supplies like clothes, cooking pots, canvas to make temporary shelters, etc,” he said.
“Whatever you are able to assist us with, please do, many have lost their homes and we need everyone’s support during this time.”
“I also urge all East New Britain people to stand together and let’s all work together to help rebuild our province,” he said.
