Work on toilets, garbage system nears completion

WORK on toilets and the garbage system for the Aigris Market at Lae’s Tidal Basin started a week ago and is expected to be completed by the end of next week.
The market, which serves most of the Labu tribes, the public and those travelling to and from Popondetta in Northern was shut two weeks ago after the Lae City Council condemned the toilets and garbage system.
Huon Gulf’s Wampar LLG ward 8 councillor Sam Yabon said that accessories for toilets had been bought while negotiations were underway for new rubbish drums to be set up.
He said garbage fees were paid on Friday. The water has also been paid for.
“The shutting down of the market has affected women doing their marketing but we tried all we could do to get the market up and operating again,” Yabon said.
He said mothers from the three Labu tribes complained last week about the long shutdown.
Lae City Council environmental health inspector Paul Wiwi said the approach they had taken for the Aigris Market would also apply to other markets in the city.
“After Aigris Market, we will visit 13A China Town market, Malahang, Kamkumung, Bumayong and other markets around the city to assess their health status and tidiness,” he said.
He said cooked food should not be sold together or close to where betel nuts were sold. The sitting arrangements should be changed, he said.
Wiwi said for Aigiris, a plan had been given for the sitting arrangement and the market management had to comply with it.
