WORKS Department will clamp down on unnecessary road compensation claims to the state by enforcing the Road Infrastructure Protection Act, Minister Francis Awesa said.

Awesa told parliament yesterday that he had spoken to the police commissioner to hold a meeting with political leaders and police commanders in the Highlands region to look at ways of controlling the problem.

He said the forum would give emphasis to the Act which had not been enforced since it was passed in 2010.

“This law has not been implemented and no one has been charged to date,” he said.

“It is our intention to start charging people under the Act because it is of public interest to do so.

“I have discussed the issue with the police commissioner and we intend to hold a meeting in the Highlands region with all the political leaders and police commanders there to make it known that there are laws and police will enforce them otherwise the situation will continue,” he said.
