Workshop raises awareness on cyber security

AN information security workshop to up-skill Papua New Guinean systems administrators was held in Port Moresby, last week.
The 26 participants from the government, internet service providers and private sector went through theory presentations, hands-on exercises and group discussions.
Topics covered included information security overview, threat and counter measures to confidentiality, integrity and availability, DDoS (distributed denial of service) fundamentals and mitigation and security policies.
Other topics include operating system security, penetration testing, insecure file permissions, operational security, cryptography, password control for end-user perspective and secure server side storage.
The training was facilitated by the local internet registry Asia Pacific network information centre (APNIC) internet security specialist Jamie Gillespie and community trainer Jethro Webston Tambeana from Vanuatu.
The workshop was part of the APNIC foundation’s efforts to raise awareness and build capacity in cyber security in Pacific economies.
It was carried out through the project “Internet development in PNG: technical capacity building, cyber security support and IXP development”.
It was funded by the foundation with contributions from the Australian government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
