EAST SEPIK’s Wosera-Gawi people have been suffering from poor infrastructure development for many years, basic services such as roads, schools, and healthcare facilities have broken down which makes it difficult for the people.
Hamilton Malken, from Rubukim village, said Wambisa and Kaugia roads in south and north Wosera local level government (LLGs) are no longer accessible by vehicles.
He said this was affecting public servants serving in the four primary schools, Wosera Secondary, Kaugia Junior High and Kaugia Health Centre.
“Numbunge to Wapindukim sections are also affected despite promise of improvement,” Maliken said.
“The roads are riddled with potholes and are often impassable during the rainy season, making it difficult for farmers to transport garden produce, cocoa and vanilla to Maprik and Wewak markets.
“With high cocoa production, vehicle were forced through the rugged road to transport cocoa and at times farmers carry cocoa bags to a central location for pickup.”
Malken said Wambisa, Kaugia and Kunjugini health centres are understaffed and not medically equipped, community health workers refuse to serve there due to poor road conditions.
“The people deserve a leader who will prioritise infrastructure development and work towards improving their quality of life.
“Teachers teaching at Setaka, Kaugia, Kwanjiwiak, Wambisa and Wambang Primary schools are affected as they are located five to six kilometres away from the main highway.
“Wosera is not improving in terms of service delivery, I am really in despair as to where the district services improvement programme (DSIP) funds are being used because there seems to be no evidence of utilising these funds on public services,” Malken said.
He called on the local MP to assist those in his electorate who were affected by poor infrstructure and services.
“I’m calling on our MP Joseph Yopyyopy, who is so quiet, to surface and address these issues at hand as your people are really struggling.”
