Governor–General Sir Bob Dadae attended a Remembrance Day service in Port Moresby on Sunday to honour Papua New Guineans who served in WWII.
Sir Bob paid tribute to Papua New Guineans who died during the war, adding the people were now enjoying the fruits of their sacrifices.
“I am privilege and honoured to say that our ordinary people who served in WWII sacrificed their future for our future and that of generations to come,” he said.
Sir Bob said it was sad that we did not know most of their names.
He said the exact records of how many locals were killed, including those in the allied forces and the Japanese Imperial Army, were not known.
“I know that we’ll never know their names but we have heard of them and we will continue to honour them during Remembrance Day.”
Sir Bob said that although the war was not PNG’s, it attracted the country’s volunteers and carriers who served with dignity.
“Our people knew little that their involvement in the war indicated their stand against tyranny, and  stand for liberty.”
Sir Bob proposed to visit other memorial sites throughout the country during next year’s Remembrance Day.
“I believe by getting our people involved in commemorating this event at the provincial and community level, it will make our people fully appreciate the significance of Remembrance Day.”
