THE National Executive Council (NEC) has approved for Papua New Guinea to have its own special envoy for climate and environment, a state minister says.
Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Minister Wera Mori said yesterday that Ruel Yamuna, former managing director of Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) had been appointed to the role.
Mori said Yamuna, a lawyer by profession, had been an active member of the State climate negotiation team since 2012 and had represented the country at the regional level (Apec) and international level and was confident that he would continue to serve the country well in this new role.
“Having been part of the adoption of the historic Paris Climate Accord in 2015 and now with conclusion of the Paris rulebook last year in Glasgow, I have every trust that Yamuna will serve with distinction in his new role,” Mori said.
“As the current Coalition for Rainforest Nations chair, I can say that ultimately, climate finance and support is what our people need to adapt to the effects of climate change and this can be mobilised through climate diplomacy.”
