REGISTRATION is open for teams that are looking to compete in the annual National Souths Basketball League which is scheduled for April 14-15, says patron Johnny Yawari.
He said all registration fees would be paid to the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea’s bank account.
“Each men’s and women’s team are required to pay a registration fee of K1,000 into the federation’s account,” Yawari said.
“The federation will provide its account details to the teams.
“This way, registration will be controlled.
“The federation will monitor teams that have registered, so we know exactly which teams are confirmed to take part.”
Meanwhile, Southern Highlands-owned company WB Transport — a subsidiary of WB Group Limited — has backed the league with K3,000.
Group chairman John Kongoi said the company was happy to partner the league.
“I congratulate the league for engaging the federation to run the competition,” he said.
“We are proud to support the league.
“We are encouraging other Southern Highlanders to work together to support communities.”
President Silas Nicky said his league had plans to help develop the sport at the district level with support from the federation.
“The league is not just a game or a tournament,” he said.
“We are looking at a semi-professional league from next year.
“We have been playing tournaments for the last 15 years.
“Next year, we are trying to go back to every district and province to help develop basketball.
“We are working alongside the federation.”
