RABAUL Gurias released Justin Yoka and Noel Joel after the former SP Hunters pair refused to take the Covid-19 vaccine prior to last month’s Digicel Cup season kick-off, says coach Marcus Kaugla.
He said after his side’s 22-4 win over Goroka Lahanis on Sunday that it was unfortunate that Yoka and Joel didn’t get to debut for the Agmark-sponsored club.
The Gurias recruited the pair, from Pangia, Southern Highlands, in the pre-season.
“Unfortunately, we had to release five-eighth Yoka and hooker Joel because they refused the vaccine,” Kaugla said.
“Every player had the freedom of choice and both men decided against it.
“Under the new Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League protocols, a player can’t be part of a Digicel Cup team without being vaccinated.
“The authorities make the rules and we have to follow them.
“But if they change their mind (and decide to take the vaccine) then we are open to welcoming them back.”
Kaugla has promoted rookie Mark Alunga to the starting halves while Nathan Tente and Silas Gahuna share the hooking duties.
Meanwhile, Kaugla said he was happy to give young players an opportunity in the country’s premier rugby league competition.
“Most of them are new, that’s why we got off to a slow start in 2021,” he said.
“But as the season progresses, they will settle in and be more comfortable.
“So I am confident that they will play their natural game once they get used to playing at the semi-professional level.”

If they have the freedom of choice, that does not mean they are going for or against.
They are free to choose and that’s their choice and it should be respected. There is no reason to terminate them Mr. Terminator.
