More than 50 youths from 2-Mile settlement in Lae have formed an association to participate in the development of Lae, Morobe and Papua New Guinea.
The 2-Mile Bee-side Youths Association was formed by youths living around Zero and One Block within 2-Mile, ward 4 of Lae Urban Council, to help them take opportunities.
It will also become a platform for the youths to drive awareness and to take initiatives to maintain law and order.
Team leader Okam Gedisa said the association was made up of unemployed youths who wanted to come out of lawlessness to earn an honest living in the city.
“Bee-side means Bugandi side or settlement alongside the side fence of Bugandi Secondary School perimeter from the Miles,” he said. “Many of these youths were born and raised here in this settlement and they have observe the development without their participation.
“Although we have lived here for a good number of years, very little attention has been given to the youths.”
Gedisa said they were unemployed because their parents do not have enough money to send them to school when the school before the TFF policy was introduced.
“We agree to work together in this association to change the mindset that settlements are the main contributors to urban problems,” Gedisa said.
“We will change our mindset and make our visitors believe that we can contribute meaningfully to the development of Lae city.”
