ABOUT 300 youths from suburbs and settlements in Lae are to be engaged to work with police during their festive season operations, Lae law and order team leader Sam Oyaya says.
Oyaya said the youths would be involved in a neighbourhood-watch programme to assist police in addressing fight crime.
“The neighbourhood-watch programme is the first in Lae and will be launched next week at the Tent Citi Police Station,” he told The National.
“Senior police officers, government representatives and law and order committees are expected to turn up at the launching.”
Oyaya said youths in the neighbourhood watch would work as reservists and monitor their areas as agents for police.
“These youths have shown interest to join police reservists next year and they will do their best to assist police,” he said.
“They will act as eyes and ears for police to clamp down on illegal activities.
“These youths knows their communities well so they will be in a better position to be able to give accurate information to police to ensure this festive season is celebrated peacefully in Lae.”
Oyaya urged Lae residents to make use of the police toll-free number to report any crime.
“Assistance from business houses, government and individuals can contribute to a trouble free festive season for Lae city.”
