A SUCCESSFUL public awareness campaign on law and order issues in Northern has seen youths and criminals surrender home-made guns and ammunition to police.
The awareness, which started last November, was initiated by Minister for Higher education and Ijivitari MP David Arore in conjunction with the provincial police commander Supt Victor Isouve.
During the awareness, 40 home-made guns plus ammunitions were surrendered to police in the presence of Deputy Governor Douglas Garawa, deputy administrator Tako Gwae, church representatives, parents and the public.
Police said most of the weapons surrendered were from youths who resided at
Isivi, Goruda, CCR, Beggars, Ombura, SBS and Marimari streets.
Arore gave K45,000 to each of the seven areas that surrendered the weapons. He urged them to use the money wisely by setting up small businesses to sustain them and the community they lived in.
The youths’ representative John Manuda said the funds would be put to good use.
Assistance police commissioner Southern Division Jerry Frank commended Isouve and his policemen for the good work that ensured a peaceful Christmas and New Year in the province.
