Youths undergo financial literacy training

MORE than 60 single mothers and youths of Lae Urban ward achieved their financial literacy certificates after attending a course.
Sixty-four youths, school leavers and single mothers attended the course over 10 days at the Lae urban local level government ward two council office.
Training was conducted by the Ginigoada Foundation and sponsored by City Pharmacy Ltd.
The ward two youth association arranged the training for its members.
Ginigoada Foundation representative Gini Galamo said they conducted more than 500 training sessions in the province attended by about 10,000 people. With the theme of “your struggle is our concern, and success is joy”, the foundation moved to Lae in 2014 and had been training a lot of people.
Galamo said they wanted to do more but there was no support.
A senior community member Dr John Garap said training was a first step by youths to open up.
“Use the knowledge to attain and open your pathways in life. Don’t sit and wait. Humble yourselves and give your knowledge to help the community,” he said.
Ward two councillor Carol Yawing told the youths and mothers to work hard for what they want in life.
“Nothing comes easy and for free. Go and put your knowledge and certificate (financial literacy) you get today into action,” she said.
Morobe youth officer Robert Williong said youth unemployment was a major problem that needed much government’s attention.
“Unemployment problem is very big. Most graduates of tertiary institutions and school leavers with very high qualifications can’t easily find job,” he said.
“That alone makes our work more complicated to address all youth issues as well as finding jobs for those who have graduated in different professions.”
