YOUTHS from four villages in the Kewabi local level government area of Southern Highlands have built a bridge made from bush material to allow villagers to take their produce to the market.
The temporary bridge connects four villages in Ialibu to the main highway.
The work was thought up by Karanas Primary School head teacher Philip Kapu.
Kapu said farmers needed the bridge to take their garden produce to the market.
Students also need to use it during rainy days to cross to the district station.
“Students from as far as Isale village wake up at 5am and walk to school at the government station,” Kapu said.
“So we have cut down logs from the bush to build the bridge. Youths from Isale, Maraloma, Yamba and Sukulawe worked hard to put this bridge together.
“The bridge also helps to get more than 2000 people connected to the main highway.
“As a teacher by profession, I believe that students should sleep properly and be able to attend classes even on rainy days. I decided to build a bush-material bridge that can help everyone.
“We are hoping to complete the other three bridges so that Isale can be connected to the main highway for the first time after many years.”
