MORESBY Northeast MP Andrew Mald has called on the government to set up four medical emergency units at strategic locations in the National Capital District.
He said this during question time last week, saying that money should be made available to prepare NCD for natural disasters and other emergencies.
Mald suggested that these units were set up at the airport, the Port Moresby General Hospital, Gerehu and the downtown central business district.
He said St John Ambulance was providing emergency services but it had very few ambulances and its resources were stretched to cope with an ever-increasing population.
He also noted that the public transport system was unreliable in an emergency.
Mald said the units he proposed would be fully equipped and staffed for emergencies round the clock.
However, Health Minister Sasa Zibe said the government did not have the money to build these units in the city.
