PEOPLE should treat disability as a development and human rights issue rather than a medical one, the Brown Kapi Foundation says.

The foundation and the Papua New Guinea Rehabilitation Centre have started an awareness drive to educate people about that.

Chairman Brown Kapi recently visited the Cheshire disAbility Services in Port Moresby to donate two wheelchairs – a manual one and one powered by a rechargeable battery.

He gave food rations and two bales of second-hand clothes, plus K1,000.

“I hope PNGCDS uses the personal financial contribution to buy particular needs of the 21 persons living with disabilities at the centre,” he said.

“They should be given the freedom  and opportunity to choose and make decisions for themselves.”

The electrical wheelchair was given to Trevor Thomas, from Goroka, and who lives at 9-Mile.

He said the wheelchair would make his life better.

“I would like to thank the Brown Kapi Foundation and the Cheshire disAbility Service through their community-based rehabilitation programme for allowing me to live a normal life with the aid of this new electric wheelchair.

Cheshire disAbility Services acting general manager Joyce Koupere thanked the foundation.
