11 seriously injured in crash

ELEVEN people, including three children, were seriously injured in a car accident at Tapo along the South Coast Highway between Walium and Madang yesterday afternoon, police say.
Madang police commander acting superintendent Mazuc Rubiang said according to traffic officers who were at the scene, the vehicle was travelling from Madang town to Walium when it went off the road at Tapo.
He said the vehicle veered to the right crossed the lane and went off the road but no deaths were reported, however, many were injured and taken to Modilon Hospital.
Rubiang said according to the report from the hospital there were 29 casualties with 11 people sustaining serious injuries.
He said three children between the ages of six and seven were among the injured. Rubiang said two women were also admitted with dislocated hips while an infant, the driver, and several other men were under close observation.
He said police responded quickly and rushed the injured passengers to the hospital.
Rubiang said he had spoken regularly about the need for all road users – drivers and passengers – to follow traffic rules on overloading, drink driving and prioritise safety but people were ignorant.
He said police were investigating the accident.
