SIXTEEN people including four children adrift at sea in a banana boat for four hours due to engine failure have been rescued by the crew members of a tugboat.
Captain Arnold Biar and the Pacific Towing (PNG) Ltd Madang-based tugboat Victory rescued the 12 adults and four children in waters between Madang and Basamuk at 1.30pm on Monday.
The tugboat took the 16 to Madang Port on Monday. All the passengers were injury-free.
Their seven-metre boat’s 40-HP engine had problems.
Biar said it was fortunate that the tugboat happened to be in the area and rescued them.
He stressed the importance of safety at sea.
“Always make sure that you have lifejackets and proper equipment on board, and never overload the boat,” he said. He said the National Maritime Safety Authority had information on how to safely operate small boats at sea.
“Remember, it is your life that is at risk. Always respect the sea and plan for your trip. It is always important to follow safety measures.”
