Nineteen women from across the country completed their training at the Political Leadership Academy for Women in Port Moresby last Friday.
The academy was established through a partnership between the Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance (Pilag) and the United Nations (UN) Women.
Participant Effo Mare from Morobe said she learnt how to lead people at all levels of government.
“Some of us lacked the theory and knowledge needed for our work,” Mare said.
Chief executive officer for Pilag Michael Barobe hailed the important work of UN Women under its ‘women make the change programme’, in lifting the profile of women and creating opportunities that empowered women to participate in political discussions in the country.
Also witnessing the ceremony were donor partner representatives from the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, current and former politicians who had provided mentorship to the cohort of women.
The UN Women and Pilag in a joint statement said the academy aimed to contribute to a leadership pipeline to support subnational female politicians to advance their political careers.
The second cohort of women will start their training on May 2022.
