THE mystery surrounding the bundles of Kina currency notes found in a swamp at Morata, Port Moresby, last week is yet to be solved, with police remaining silent on the matter.
Efforts made by The National to get comments from National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Gideon Ikumu since Sunday were unsuccessful.
The National reported on Monday that people living in Morata, 8-Mile and Waigani had been flocking to the swamp after a boy, who found bundles of cash, alerted the people that the main sewer was spewing money.
The people swam around in the dirty water looking for more notes.
Health secretary Dr Osborne Liko said the people were obviously exposing themselves to health risks.
He said the National Capital District health authority must take ownership of the case as “operational matters” came under their mandate.
Morata one resident Gilbert Goi said the boy found a bundle of notes amounting to K1,800 in the sewage while hunting for birds on Wednesday.
“The boy later found another K3,500 flowing out of one of the sewage outlets,” he said.
“After the boy told the people in Morata, many flocked to the swamp scavenging for money in the sewer.”
