20 drunkards arrested

TWENTY men, who decided to turn up drunk in town during Independence Day anniversary celebrations in Kimbe, West New Britain, were arrested and charged by police.
“My men arrested 20 drunkards who had decided to come into town and ruin other people’s celebrations,” provincial police commander Supt John Midi told The National yesterday.
“Apart from that we had a very peaceful and orderly independence weekend.
“People’s attitude and mindsets have changed and they were well behaved.”
In New Ireland, police reported a peaceful and quiet independence celebrations.
Provincial police commander Supt Gideon Ikumu said Sepiks in the province had celebrated Sepik Day on Sept 14-15 followed by independence on Sept 16 but there was no problem.
“This is the first time the Sepik community here celebrated their provincial day without any trouble,” Ikumu said.
“I commend the Sepik community in New Ireland and the people here who celebrated peacefully,” he said.
Meanwhile, in East New Britain a man was killed by his son last Thursday and an escapee was shot and recaptured by police on Saturday.
