TWENTY-one PNG citizens were arrested for smuggling drugs into Indonesia over five months until April, Indonesian-based PNG consular-general Col Jeffrey Wiri says
He said that they were still in police custody in Jayapura awaiting trial since their arrest between November and April.
“Since then my office has not received any information from Indonesian police or Immigrations of any more arrest of PNG citizens in Papua Province,” Wiri said.
“That’s has always been the practice of consular notification under the Geneva Convention that the Indonesian authorities in Jayapura have followed.”
He denied Indonesian police reports that two PNG citizens suspected to be involved with Indonesian separatist groups were arrested for possession of 3kgs of drugs worth about K5000 on the streets of Jayapura.
Keerom police station chief Windi Harto said the PNG suspects had12 plastics packed with marijuana and documents related to Operation Papua Merdeka (OPM) rebels in Yowong village in Papua Province near the PNG-Indonesian border on Sunday.
“We also found documents related to TPN/OPM separatists, and for this document we are still investigating,” Harto said.
