THIRTY-eight teams will be participating in the Wewak soccer tournament during the festive period in East Sepik.
The tournament, sponsored by the MS Wagambie Lawyers, has attracted teams from Yangoru-Saussia, Maprik, Ambunti-Drekikir, Turubu in East Coast, Hawaiin in West Coast, Kubalia and Murik Lakes and Aitape from West Sepik.
Tournament treasurer Otto Nangromo said teams would be competing in men’s division one, men’s division two and women’s division.
He said 18 teams had registered for men’s division one, 16 for men’s division two and four teams for the women’s division.
Nangromo said defending champions Ace Football Club (AFC) will be out to retain their title this year.
However, they would face stiff challenge Caltex Brother from Kreer Compound, Kreer Heights and Las Sarpens from Sepik Timbers and Niugo settlement.
He said preparations were on target.
Nangoromo said his working committee of Jimmy Korei, Clarence Hukahu and Derek Maira were putting the finishing touches before the tournament kicks off at the Prince Charles oval on Saturday.
MS Wagambie Lawyers principal Michael Wagambie said yesterday he made a commitment last year to support the tournament.
“Basically, East Sepik provincial administration and the local communities do not have any sporting activities planned for the festive season,” Wagambie said.
“I took the opportunity to assist when they organisers requested to stage the tournament,” he added.
