5000 women in Madang register with new bank

MORE than 5000 Madang women have opened accounts with the newly introduced Mama Bank in the province.
They are using the biometrics system, which require all of their 10 fingers to register and open bank accounts.
They will save and withdraw just like other banks.
Vani Vua, the coordinator of Mama Access Point (MAP), said they wanted to make it very easy for women to open bank accounts and save.
Mama Bank is part of the Women’s Micro Bank, started by late Janet Sape, who was also founder of Women in Business. Mama Access Point Madang branch manager Jude Ainui said Madang had 5000 to 6000 registered membersd.
He said the bank operates in Wewak, Maprik, Goroka, Morata and Waigani in Port Moresby and Madang.
Ainui said they had more than 20,000 women registered with the six branches.
