MORE than 50kg of marijuana have been confiscated in a village garden in Ialibu-Pangia district of Southern Highlands.
Ialibu police station commander Mack Anema said it was the second time police had confiscated marijuana in a village garden.
“We confiscated all the marijuana from the village G-ardens but unfortunately were not able to make any arrests as all the suspects had already run away when we arrived,” he said.
Anema said there had been an increase in drug-related crimes and offences recently. He suspects there may be more marijuana gardens.
“I appeal to people living in the area to report to police anyone you suspect or know growing marijuana,” he said.
“This drug destroys the lives of so many youths and causes so much law and order issues.”
Anema said the alcohol ban was still in place and called on the people in the area to observe the laws in place.
“Some people are still smuggling in beer to the province. If we find you we will have you arrested and charged.”
Anema said it was the Christmas festive season and there were many different sport, church and celebration programmes but people must learn to respect and be considerate of one another.
“Drugs and alcohol are not just a police matter. They affect everyone in the community. So the community must take ownership of the problem and work with the police to address the issue.”
