Festive season security operations begin

POLICE have begun operations around the country for Christmas and the New Year, Deputy Commissioner and Chief of Operations Jim Andrews says.
Andrews said the increased police operation was aimed at reducing crime and all alcohol-related incidents that were common during the festive season.
“Police will mount random roadblocks along the various highways to clamp down on traffic infringements, including drink-driving and transportation of contraband and illicit substances,” he said.
Andrews said the operations also targeted black market trading especially in urban settlements.
“These activities affect peace and good order in the communities and therefore it is imperative for police to clamp down on such activities,” he said.
Andrews said illegal beer outlets would be closed down and those involved in bootlegging would face the law.
He said statistics showed that brawls, fatal traffic accidents, and ethnic violence were mostly related to alcohol abuse.
Andrews said people found to be drinking and causing nuisance in public places faced the risk of being locked up at police stations.
He appealed to citizens across the nation to take heed of the law and act responsibly when celebrating Christmas and New Year.
