POLICE in Western Highlands have declared the Mt Hagen main market safe for vendors and customers to use.
Provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Martin Lakari said police conducted an operation in the market to get rid of youths causing problems.
Lakari said 25 were charged with being in possessing of homebrew and marijuana inside the market.
He said 12 policemen were assigned to patrol the market. They have a new police vehicle.
Lakani said Mt Hagen police were closely monitoring the main market to ensure that there was order in the market every day.
“Some youths who see fit to sell marijuana and homebrew in the market are now in the cell. And more will be arrested,” he said.
Lakari urged the vendors to report to the market management or any police officer of youths selling illegal goods or threatening vendors and collecting illegal market fees.
“I want order in the market, people must feel free to come into the market,” he said.
Lakani said in the past many people were afraid to come to the market because of criminal activities.
