MOUNT Hagen resident judge Justice Allen David has raised concern over the backlog of bench warrant cases involving 539 people.

David said the 539 people must be brought to court so that they could answer to the cases against them.

He said it was the roles of lawyers to bring their clients to court.

“If you are representing a particular person then it is your responsibility to bring him or her to the court,” David said.

“This is not good when more than 500 people are working around freely.”

David urged community leaders to bring in any person in their village wanted by the court.

He said many of the people on bench warrants lived in communities around Mt Hagen.

“It is no good seeing them living in the communities with leaders who are claiming to maintain the law,” David said.

He said the community must make an effort to reduce the crime rate in the province.

“Lawyers have to play their part and make sure that their clients are faithful. This is not happening.

“That is why people are roaming around freely,” David said.

“I want all of you to cooperate.”
