Attack mars vaccination

THE safety of vaccination staff remains a concern for the National Capital District health services after a team was attacked last week, officials say.
Director of public health Dr Niko Wuatai said one of their staff was assaulted at Tokarara.
He was a male staff at the Tokarara clinic.
“It caused a little problem for us to go back into that community,” Wuatai said.
“There was some hostility in that area.”
Wuatai said they re-established contact with the community after three days.
The integrated measles-rubella and polio vaccination campaign is at the mop-up stage in the country and Wuatai appealed to communities to allow the vaccination staff to do their jobs.
He said they also had similar incidents in other parts of the city.
Wuatai said the staff and volunteers were only trying to ensure that all children were vaccinated.
“Support and protect our team when they are in your community,” he said.
Vaccination coordinator for Port Moresby North West Esther Pinga said they were having problems in settlements.
She said it was those who were under the influence of alcohol who caused inconveniences.
Pinga said they had to call for police escort to enter some settlements.
The vaccinations in NCD will end tomorrow.
