POLICE chiefs have been urged to reprimand officers who assault members of the public.
Kikori Oil Pipeline Landowners Association chairman (KOPLA) Bomsy Boviro claimed that he was assaulted by a police sergeant on Saturday near the Big Rooster outlet at Boroko, Port Moresby.
He has filed a complaint with internal investigation unit at 6-Mile and hopes the matter is looked into urgently.
Boviro suffered a cut below his left ear and injured his jaw during the assault.
“I had a heated argument with some people who are known to me when the Boroko police station vehicle came to the scene,’’ he said.
“Instead of the policemen getting information on the incident, they started assaulting me for no good reason.”
Boviro was concerned that the assault took place right in front of the police station commander, Mai Opai.
He said in his capacity as chairman of KOPLA, he had contributed a lot to police operations by donating vehicles and boats to officers in Kikori and Gulf.
He condemned the assault, saying the actions of a few officers were damaging the good work of the majority in the  police force.
Newly-appointed NCD metropolitan commander Supt Peter Guinness has called on police officers to be disciplined and show respect for the public.
