About 30 youths from the Telikom compound in Waigani, NCD, have initiated their own programme to protect their residents from the Covid-19 pandemic by carrying out health and safety measures at the entry points.
Group coordinator Ps Jeffery Zongezia told The National that the youths started the programme on July 31, by conducting temperature checks and sanitising hands at the compound’s main gate and small gate.
Ps Jeffery said the youths had the potential to contribute to the community through this programme.
“This is one way of helping the youths see life in a different perspective, to know that they can contribute good things back to the community,” he said.
“This is the generation that will look after this nation in the years ahead so this programme is helping to instil good values and to encourage them that they can help the growth of this nation.
“I am so proud of these youths, seeing them serving their community and by doing this, they will discover some of their potential.”
Zongezia said the youths had written to the Waigani Police Station commander seeking clearance to be involved in the awareness programme.
He said the Telikom community was informed last week and they had been supportive of the programme and had provided all the personal protective equipment.
Youth leader Garry Gigi said they were concerned about the increase in the number of the Covid-19 cases in NCD and they decided to volunteer to do awareness work.
He said when they first started, they drew the attention of their community who had sponsored them with the PPEs.
