Warders concerned about road

PRISON authorities at the Beon correctional facility in Madang are concerned about the poor condition of the road they use to transport prisoners to court and back.
Prison commander Supt Andrew Polis said prisoners recently escaped twice while being transported to court in town.
“I want the responsible authorities to fix the road because it is a risk to the lives of prison officers and the police,” he said.
“The bridge outside the gate is in poor condition and the pieces of timber used on the bridge are damaged.”
He said the open-back truck they used to transport prisoners was in a poor condition.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the police prosecutions division were concerned about travelling to Beon prison when it rained.
He said a vehicle transporting prisoners almost went off the bridge last week.
The conditions get worse when it rained leaving the road and bridge in a slippery condition.
They had to cancel trips to court at times when the road and bridge became too dangerous to use.
