CENTRAL Taekwondo Association will stage its provincial Taekwondo selections on Saturday at Alewai Village, Hula, Rigo district. The event is open to all taekwondo practicing athletes in the province who wish to be selected for representative duties. A good number of fighters have confirmed their participation, with 25 fighters from Bereina, 15 from Boera, 30 from Hula and a handful from Aroma.
But the organising team would like to see even more fighters.
Tournament director Edward Kassman said this was the only selection event for the province and urged all taekwondo athletes to attend.“This year taekwondo has 14 provinces registered to compete at the PNG Games. This means that there will be more fighters vying for the medals, meaning we have to select our best.“The larger number of competitors, the wider range we will have in selecting,” Kassman said.
Sixteen fighters will be selected into Team Central, with 12 in the men’s division and four women.
A Central taekwondo management team and coaching staff will be identified and all coaches and trainers are encouraged to turn up.
A visiting team from the World Taekwondo Federation will be at the event to showcase elite techniques aimed at entertaining and encouraging more people to take part in the sport.
Interested competitors can call Edward Kassman on phone 7219 9349 or Vincent Alewa on 7682 6331.
