Public servants face tricky issue

Letters

AS a public servant in a Government department, I have seen that there are other public servants who have openly indicated their intentions to contest the national election.
However, theses public servants have decided to choose the normal resignation process just before the issue of writs.
That means, they are still working and using State resources to prepare themselves for the elections.
The recent amendments to the Public Service Management Act which restricts resigning officers from coming back to the public service within the first five years has made it difficult for these officers to tender their resignation within the time given by the DPM to contest the election.
Because their intent is to return to the public service in the event that they lose, the safest thing for them is to resign in the normal way.
Departments were advised to keep an eye on these group of public servants so that when they resign (before the issue of writs) to contest the election, they should not be rehired.
