Fight over phone leads to death

 A MAN was stabbed to death when an argument over a missing mobile phone turned in a fight between two groups of men in Port Moresby.

Badili police station commander Bill Werake confirmed the incident, saying police had moved in quickly to ease the situation.

The argument started after a group of men from Eastern Highlands who had gone to a tucker shop to buy drinks met a group from Gulf. 

They accused one of the Gulf men of stealing a mobile phone belonging to one of them.

A fight ensued in which a man from Gulf stabbed one of the Eastern Highlands men. He was rushed to the Gerehu clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

 “We managed to get the people to cool down a bit so there might not be any further destruction in the community,” Werake said.

“At the moment, two houses belonging to Gulf people have been burnt down and two other persons from Gulf have sustained serious injuries. 

“All the people from Gulf living in the vicinity have deserted the area. We are urging the people not to take the law into their own hands.”
