Batters to lift in duel

PORT Moresby women’s softball champions United Sisters and the in-form Wantoks must produce a disciplined batting performance when they meet on Saturday.

Sisters’ batting and fielding was their let down against a spirited Yokomo side last weekend.

Wantoks had the game in their grasp until the last inning when they allowed Wolves to capitalise on fielding errors to draw the match.

Both teams are desperate for a win having in mind the competition ladder is open with three games remaining.

United’s captain Georgina Mautu and Wantoks’ veteran Sandra Sawaraba both admitted that the batting was the crucial area.

Mautu said though the loss was a realisation of certain areas in the camp needing improvement – Sisters needed to lift their game.

“Wantoks are a class outfit and are on fire at the moment,” Mautu said.

“But I’m sure that the ladies will give their all. With the season nearly done, being a team in the middle of the table, every game is vital.”

Lead batter Tersie Komek is expected to get her side off to solid start and set the tone for the batting for the rest of the line-up in Basemath Xkenjik, Mautu, rising star Florence Daple, Claire Wutt, Natalie Petalie, Nicole Mamia, Priscilla Mocke and Milcha Xkenjik.

Wantoks will be without the services of injured Kolish Banam but Sawaraba has instructed her charges to have faith in themselves.

The former international will have the support of experienced Pala Manet, Addie Paska, Elly Arek, new recruit Dianne Gideon, Farapo Sevese, Margaret Parom on second base, pitcher Mathilda Moe and Debbie Maira for a better outing.

In the other matches Yokomo face the might of Stingerz, Chebu take on Admiralty and Gazelle meet Wolves.
