A touch of charity in Waria

 MEMBERS of the Nigata International Charity Organisation (NICO)from Japan visited primary and pre-schools in Waria valley, Morobe patrol post, Huon Gulf, as part of a school exchange programme.

NICO comprises mostly of language teachers who raise funds for new classroom building projects including school materials such as reading books and pens.

In return, pupils in Waria offered traditional gifts – grass shirts, armlets, bracelets, conch shells and other traditional items – as a cultural exchange to maintain the partnership.

Director for Culture Link PNG Ltd Maine Winny said the group had been raising funds for the Waria valley pupils as their adventure building trip to Papua New Guinea. 

Culture Link Ltd facilitates and coordinates all logistics and itinerary of the adventure for the cultural exchange partnership established in 2001.

This year, 10 members visited Mt Unu Elementary School in Dona village. They donated some funds and participated in the building of a new double classroom pre-school building named after former school teacher Kepi Sanang.

Eco-Homes coordinator Giria Zia said Mt Unu elementary school was the pioneer pre-school in the Morobe local level government.

Zia said NICO’s donation was a blessing to the Dona community.

NICO team leader James Kenyou thanked the Waria valley people for their generosity and hospitality. 

Dona people held a feast and offered gifts to the visitors to take home with them.
