MT HAGEN’S Team A2Z Hardware finished on top from a field of 26 teams in the four-man ambrose competition in the Lae leg of the Prime Minister’s Corporate Golf Challenge at the Lae Golf Club on Friday with the event raising K100,000.
The annual challenge, co-sponsored by The National, is a fundraiser for Team PNG to participate in the international sporting events.
Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) corporate manager Ian Leklek said the turnout on Friday was pleasing.
“We did not stage the PM’s Golf last year because of the Coronavirus and there was a lot of uncertainty especially with business community whether they would turn up or not so we took a gamble, I think it paid off so I’m pleased with the turnout,” he said.
“In Lae, the registration was K4,000 per team so we had 25 teams that paid and registered and one was a complimentary team that would equate to about K100,000 raised through registration.”
Leklek said teams from Morobe seemed to win the challenge and he was impressed with Highlands and Madang teams doing well.
“They came out in numbers again as usual this year. I’m very thankful for the support they have shown. At the end of the day all funds raised go towards Team PNG. We’ve got two games back to back this year,” Leklek said of July’s Pacific Mini Games and August’s Commonwealth Games.
A2Z Hardware won the tournament with a net score of 56.25 and received a prize of a return trip to Rabaul and back from Air Niugini while runners-up Avross Lawyers also from Mt Hagen finished with a net score of 59.25 received a prize of a return trip to Madang and back from Air Niugini.
