ROOKIE Waghi Tumbe coach Baundo Aba said he was happy to reach the Digicel Cup grand final for the first time despite Sunday’s 10-16 loss to Lae Tigers.
The former SP Hunter forward backed his men to bounce back from the defeat with a stronger campaign in the country’s premier rugby league competition next year.
“It is heart breaking for all of us, including the fans and sponsors,” Aba said.
“But we are happy to have come this far.
“I think there were a lot of errors and we couldn’t complete our sets.
“Halves Saki Peter and David Joseph also tried their best but we couldn’t really threaten the Tigers in attack.
“But we accept the loss and we are happy.
“We will build on from this and aim to come back stronger next year.”
Aba thanked the Jiwaka government as their sponsor, and commended the people of Jiwaka for supporting the team through out season.
“It was unfortunate that we couldn’t win them the title,” he said.
“But we appreciate their support and will continue to play for them as we continue our campaign for that elusive first title.”
Meanwhile Aba said there is still a chance he could return to rugby league as a player.
“It depends on my injury, I’m still not fully recovered.
“If it heals up during the off-season then yes I could be back playing.
“But if it doesn’t then I may continue to coach if the board and the sponsors want me to continue.”
