Students carry out awareness on GBV

STUDENTS from the Moresby South electorate in the nation’s capital held a walk against gender-based violence (GBV) on Saturday morning as part of the electorate’s plan to spread awareness on the issue.
More than 40 male students who were participating in the National Schools Rugby League trials for the Southern Confederate took part in the morning walk from Three-Mile to East Boroko.
Bonzak Nomsing, a former student with Kilakila Secondary School and the team manager for the Moresby South divisions in the trials told The National that the walk was for awareness among the students and their peers.
“We all love taking part in sports like rugby league and this is the perfect way to spread an important message to our fellow students and members of the community on how we can address gender-based violence,” he said.
“We started our walk from Manu bus stop (Three-Mile) and finished up at East Boroko market where we had a small awareness talk with people around that area on GBV.
“The main idea is to use students as the advocates for this awareness so that they can reach their peers as well as parents.
“It’s a worthwhile thing for students in sports because they’re also going to be the ones that will have to face the challenge of minimising this problem in our society,” Nomsing said.
He added that the awareness was focused on getting feedback from communities and finding ways to discuss and addressing the issue of violence.
