THE Abau District Sports Development Association will be a pathway for sports development at the rural level from this year onwards.

The introduction of the sport development programme is the brainchild of Abau sports administrators Harold Koranga and Junior Mara.

The executive is headed by Koranga, his deputy/ treasurer Mara  John, with Orai John as secretary.

Koranga and Mara are sports coordinators with the Port Moresby Suburban Sports Association, under the umbrella of NCDC Sports Desk, and are qualified to manage and coordinate sports programmes and events.

Abau sports association chairman Koranga said the programme would cover the three local level governments of Abau — Cloudy Bay, Amazon Bay and Aroma Coast — with a better development structure to advance sporting careers.

Koranga said this was the missing link and they were confident of identifying and tapping raw talent, develop and educate sports people to be skilful and competitive athletes at the rural and grassroots level first.

He said Abau MP Sir Puka Temu had indicated support for the programme as it would be a human resource development tool in the district.

“We are planning to register the association with the Investment Promotion Authority to be a legal and recognised sporting body in Abau … our association constitution is in place,” he said.

Deputy chairman Mara said targeted sports were rugby league, touch football, basketball, netball and soccer for men and women.

Mara said LLG athletes would be tapped into and identified for district and provincial games.
